FAT GIRL SPEAKS

STICKS & STONES MAY BREAK MY BONES BUT WORDS WILL HURT ME

The word "FAT" still makes my cringe a little bit when I hear/read it . I've heard the word so much as a kid and it never was from a soft, warm, and meaningful place. It always was meant to be hurtful and that is exactly what it did, it hurt my feelings.

As an adult, the meaning of FAT has changed. Honestly, when I see hear/see the word I still squirm; but I don't have to urge to go run and cry into my pillow. It's difficult to totally forget about the emotions a word has put you through for most of your life.  As I learn to embrace myself as a plus size woman, I realize that it's just a WORD! This word doesn't define me as a woman. Like I stated in my previous post I am a healthy fat chick, I work out and I eat healthy. Just because I don't fit into your BMI scale doesn't mean that I'm an unhealthy slob that doesn't care about my body. I will never be a size 2/4 and I don't want to be.

I believe that as plus size, curvy, fat or whatever you want to categorize yourself as... you need to love yourself inside and out. We as women need to encourage each other and the curvy chicks of the future. People will always say and do things that will hurt your feelings. Of course, there will be days when you feel fat and ugly but every woman goes through it too. There will be more days when you look in the mirror and see that outfit hugging your curves all in the right places. Your hair and make up are flawless and you walk out that door like nothing can pull you off of cloud 9.

I found this great quote that inspires me to be great:
"This is who I am, you don't have to like me and you don't have approve of me, but I've been to this show

before and this time I'm getting what I want. I've got one voice, two chins, and more style than should be

allowed by law and I'm not apologizing for any of it!"

IS IT OK TO BE FAT???

I was up late last night and I came across "Is It Ok To Be Fat???", which was a Tuesday edition on Nightline. I was recently complaining about not having any motivation to blog, well this has definitely motivated me.

The panel consisted of Crystal Renn (plus size model), Marianne Kibry, author of "Lessons From the Fat-o-Sphere", MeMe Roth President of National Action Against Obesity, and Kim Bensen, author of "Finally Thin".

"Crystal battled years of anorexia; MeMe's parents have succumbed to obesity-related diseases; Marianne yo-yo-dieted for years before joining the fat acceptance movement; Kim attributes her weight loss to basically saving her life," said Chang, who also serves as news anchor on "Good Morning America." "I've even yo-yo dieted! This is a very public conversation that is going on at people's breakfast tables, in policy-setting circles and in magazine editorial offices. It affects everyone."

I'm so happy that there were plus size women on the panel finally defending us plus size women. I am an over weight woman, I work out and I eat pretty healthy. Someone will see me and assume that all I do is sit on my ass all day and do nothing. I do believe that an over weight woman can be healthy. I will never be a size 2 NEVER EVER!!! I am comfortable with that fact, I just want to be healthy whatever size and weight that maybe. It's horrible that you can look at someone and assume that they are unhealthy. When you have no idea what is going on in their day -to- day life.

I feel as if this issue coincides with plus size fashion. There are may designers that provide plus size clothing in their stores but will never have a plus size model on their runway shows with the rest of the models. I just don't get it, you will take our money but you won't represent us where it counts. Its actually bullshit because as a designer you have free reign to state your opinion on the runway. That is where you have the freedom and the space to show the world what you believe.

As long as I have air pumping in my body I will fight for the plus size fashion movement. I should be able to walk in a store with my size 4 friend and buy the same dress she buys on the same rack. I shouldn't have to go to the basement with the huge sign that states "PLUS SIZE" or go to a different store. Without saying, you're telling me I should be embarrassed and hide who and what I am.

How do you feel, "Is It Ok To Be Fat???"

GABBY SIDIBE COVERS V MAGAZINE
Gabby Sibide does a split cover of V magazine with Dakota Fanning (not shown above). Next month's issue of V commemorates women of all sizes. While Dakota is getting scrutinized for being too skinny (smaller that a size 0), Gabby is getting ridiculed for being too big. Both actresses discuss how they are trying to overcome what society believes is right.

Gabby states in the magazine that:

"Growing up there weren't a lot of actresses and singers that looked like me," says the New York born-and-bred actress. "There were no real times that I thought maybe I can do it, until Mo'Nique came along. She's a plus-sized woman who didn't care about one day being skinny. All my life I've been hearing that I'll never amount to anything until I am skinny. She disproved everything that everyone has ever told me."

Sidibe has garnered major Oscar buzz for her performance in "Precious" and is working on her second film, "Yelling to the Sky," alongside Zoe Kravitz.

I feel that Gabby is doing the right thing by embracing her size and not letting it change who she is. I have read a ton of comments about her and one of the first things I see is that she needs to lose weight. What does her size have to do with her craft? How do we know that she's not healthy? Healthy doesn't equate to size 2.

We need to let her be GREAT!  I admire her for who she is and what she's doing. There are millions of  little girls out there that feel like the way Gabby did at some point. They need encouragement to be wonderful and Gabby is doing that!
